The Three Worst Things About Living in Kansas City

Hello again friends! I’m usually here to talk about all the great things about living in the Kansas City area. As much as I love being a part of this community, I realize it definitely has some areas that could use some improvement. The good news is, I originally set out to name the “Five” worst things about living in Kansas City, but after much thought, I couldn’t come up with that many, so I settled on just three. That just shows you how great Kansas City truly is!

For a more in-depth review of this list, be sure to check out my YouTube Channel.

So, let’s go in reverse order and start with the 3rd worst thing about living in Kansas City, which is…

#3 The Month of February

One great thing about living in Kansas City is that you get to experience all four seasons; however, by the time February gets here, everyone is ready for winter to go away. Many of the locals like to experience winter during the holiday season in December and early January. Then February shows up, and the festive atmosphere is long gone, and our community is ready for spring.

February is also challenging in Kansas City, because our sports teams are done playing! The only exception would be if the Chiefs are in the Super Bowl; otherwise, their season is over, the Royals haven’t started playing yet, and March Madness is still a month away.

So, if you’re a longtime resident of the KC area, you know all too well how much of a downer February can be.

#2 Public Transportation

One of the areas where Kansas City lacks compared to other major cities is our public transportation system. If you live in the suburbs, you understand this better than anyone. Although the city is very drivable, it is also very spread out. So that means you must have a vehicle to get around the metro area.

There are some parts of Kansas City, like Downtown for example, where there are some forms of public transit. We have the KC Streetcar, which travels North and South from Union Station to The City Market but doesn’t extend East and West. Kansas City also has a Metro Bus System, but overall, it is not very robust and doesn’t extend to the furthest parts of the Metro area.

Unless you live Downtown or in another area that is very walkable, you are likely frustrated with Kansas City’s lack of public transportation.

#1 KCI Airport

Although there are some positives to our KCI (Kansas City International) Airport, there is a laundry list of items that need improvement. KCI is located in the very northern part of the Kansas City Metro area, making it at least a 25-minute drive from downtown. Not to mention it’s almost an hour drive for some residents in the southern portions of the metro area. Due to KCI’s location, catching a shuttle, an Uber, or a taxi to and from the airport is not an option for most people.

Inside the airport, you’ll find very few restaurants, and the ones there are not exactly the best options. After passing security, your choices are typically limited to small sandwich and snack shops near the gates. If you have a layover in Kansas City, you often have to exit the secured area to get to your connecting flight, but then go through security before getting to the appropriate gate. Because of some of these inconveniences, many airlines choose not to layover at KCI.

Fortunately, a new airport is on the way and is being built near the current airport in the Northland. Although it will still be far away from most KC metro residents, it will have many more amenities than what we have currently. According to buildkci.com the new airport should open in early 2023.
